Hi friends!
Somehow it's already almost February. But January is doing its thing:
The Weather: 🌧️ Wet. Boots required.
The Warning: 🏒 The Leafs are in town (Saturday, 4:00 PM @ Rogers Arena). Unless you have tickets, avoid downtown like it's lava from 2:00 PM onwards. The traffic will be biblical.
The Community PSA: 🎨 Calling all Marpole artists! The Marpole Community Art Exhibition is back (May 23+24) and they need local creators. Painting, sculpture, mixed media — if you make it, they want to show it. The Move: Deadline is April 24. Register here — don't procrastinate.
Option 1: The Main Event
The Gist: Free Valentine's craft at the Kids Market on Granville Island. Kids make heart-shaped "stained glass" windows using colourful vellum paper. It's cute, it's free, and they go home with "stained glass" hearts.
Why it wins: No registration. No cost. Drop in, make a thing, leave with a Valentine's craft done. That's one less Pinterest fail to attempt at home.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Kids Market, Granville Island
🗓️ When: Sunday, February 1st, 12–3 PM
👶 Ages: All ages (toddlers will need help; school-age kids can fly solo)
🚽 Potty: Easy (Kids Market has bathrooms)
💸 Cost: Free (while supplies last)
The Move: "While supplies last" is code for "Get there at 12:00 PM."

Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play
👀 Optical Illusions @ the Firehall Library
The Gist: Can you believe your eyes? Spoiler: No, you cannot.
The Firehall Branch is hosting an hour of eye-crossing, brain-bending optical illusion fun. And it's free.
Why it wins: It's after school, it's indoors, and it’s entertaining for a full hour. You might even get to sit down.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Firehall Branch Library
🗓️ When: Friday, January 30th, 3:30–4:30 pm
👶 Ages: Grades K–7
🚽 Potty: Easy (it's a library)
💸 Cost: Free
The Move: The listing doesn't mention registration. So treat it as first-come. Show up 10–15 minutes early. If you see a "Register" button when you check the event page, do it.

Option 3: The Wildcard
🎬 $3.99 Looney Tunes Movie @ Cineplex
The Gist: Cineplex Family Favourites is showing The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie — the first-ever fully animated Looney Tunes theatrical film. Daffy and Porky save the world from alien bubblegum. It's hand-drawn, it's silly, and it's four dollars.
Why it wins: $3.99 movie tickets. Saturday morning. You sit in the dark while the kids are hypnotized by cartoons. No craft supplies. No weather anxiety. No cleanup.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: International Village @ 11:30 AM or Metropolis @ 11:00 AM
🗓️ When: Saturday, January 31st
👶 Ages: All ages (best for 4+)
🚽 Potty: Easy (movie theatre)
💸 Cost: $3.99 + tax (in-theatre price)
The Move: Buy tickets at the theatre to get the $3.99 price. Online adds a booking fee — unless you're a CineClub member.

BONUS: GROWN-UP CORNER
🎻 Nielsen's "The Inextinguishable" @ the Orpheum
The Gist: A big, cinematic symphony night—written during WWI, ending with a “life wins” finale. This is the grown-up reset button for your week.
Why it wins: Because sometimes you need to hear loud, beautiful music that isn't a nursery rhyme. It’s dramatic, it’s at the Orpheum, and it’s a valid excuse to wear "outside clothes" and hire a sitter.
🎻 What: VSO Masterworks — Nielsen Symphony No. 4 “The Inextinguishable” (+ John Adams piano concerto on the program
📍 Where:Orpheum
🗓️ When: Friday, Jan 30 @ 7:30 PM
👶 Ages: Date Night (or very distinct music-nerd teens)
🚽 Potty: Fancy (Orpheum facilities are plentiful)
💸 Cost: Ticketed (Varies by seat)
The Move: Grab dinner downtown around 5:30, then head to the Orpheum. The "thunderous opening" guarantees you won't fall asleep in the comfortable chairs.

Got one friend who’d love this?
Forward this to them and save them an hour of doom-scrolling “what should we do this weekend?”
We’ve got this!
