The 99 B-Line, all vehicle traffic — detoured to 8th Ave. Sidewalks stay open, so you can still get to businesses on foot, but your driving route through Cambie is about to change.

The Gist: The 49th annual Folk Fest takes over Jericho Beach Park this weekend. Three days of world-class folk and roots music — but the real family play is the Little Folks Village, a dedicated kids zone with music, storytelling, parachute play, crafts, and a water play zone with bubbles and wands.
Why It Wins: Kids 12 and under get in free. The Little Folks Village runs all day Saturday and Sunday with hands-on stuff — crafts, water play, storytelling — so you're not just dragging them to watch adults sway with their eyes closed. Three days to choose from. Pick whichever fits.

The Gist: Saturday morning movie deal at Cineplex. This week it's Curious George on the big screen for $3.99 a ticket. In by 11, out by 12:30. Weekend started.
Why It Wins: Less than a latte per ticket. Indoors, air-conditioned, 86 minutes long. No packing, no parking drama, no sunscreen negotiations. The kind of morning where everyone's happy and you still have the whole day left.

The Move: Buy tickets online before Saturday — these sell out at popular locations. Then grab dim sum on Pender after. You're right in Chinatown.
🎪 Option 3: The Wildcard
The Gist: The VSO's 34th annual free outdoor concert at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby. The program includes Star Wars, Harry Potter, E.T., and Hook — plus Beethoven and Tchaikovsky if the grown-ups need to feel cultured. A family Playzone runs all afternoon before the concert.
Why It Wins: Free. Not "free with a catch." Actually free. The Playzone runs from 2 to 7pm, so you get five hours of family stuff before the music even starts. Then your kid hears the Star Wars theme played by a full orchestra and you watch their brain short-circuit. Blanket, picnic, summer evening at a lake. This is the stuff.

💸 Cost: Free. Bring your own food and drinks.
🅿️ Parking: Limited and the VSO knows it — they're pushing transit. Plan your trip here.
🍕 Food Situation: Pack a picnic. This is the kind of event where a blanket, a cooler, and some sandwiches make you feel like you have your life together.
The Move: Make it a double-header. Hit the Burnaby Village Museum first (it's right next door at Deer Lake) for their summer programming, then walk to the Playzone at 2. Seating at the concert is first-come, first-served — stake your blanket spot before 7.
Worth the Burnaby drive. One of those once-a-year evenings your kids will actually remember.
Also Worth Knowing
🇫🇷 Bastille Day Festival at Granville Island — Saturday, 2–11:30pm at Performance Works. The afternoon (2–6pm) is free: French food, artisan vendors, live music, family entertainment. Evening portion is ticketed. If you're already out Saturday and near the island, it's worth a swing-by.
✨Bonus: UU Family Farm
The Gist: A family farm in Richmond with 300+ animals — goats, kangaroos, emus, donkeys, and a capybara named Maple — plus a bouncy castle that just opened, included with your admission.
Why It Wins: Bouncy castle plus baby goats is a combination no child has ever said no to. The farm is open until 8pm on weekends, so you can make it a full day or a late-afternoon drop-in. It's not free, but the admission covers everything including the bouncy castle. Feed cups are $3 extra and worth every penny for the look on your kid's face when a goat eats out of their hand.

Outdoor farm. Bouncy castle closes in rain or high wind — but this weekend is dry.
