Five weeks into summer. The bag is packed before anyone asks where we're going. Snacks in, sandals on — eventually — and out the door before anyone changes their mind. Saturday's weather might have other ideas. We planned around it.
The Weather: ☀️ Friday's the winner — 24°C, full sun. Saturday's a coin flip at 21°C with showers likely. Sunday dries out, 22°C. Rain layer Saturday, you'll be fine Sunday.

🏆 Option 1: The Main Event
The Gist: The 24th annual BMO Chinatown Festival takes over Keefer and Columbia Streets for two days. Lion dances, live performances, an artisan market, food trucks, a Kids Zone with workshops and Children's Theatre, and a Cultural Corner with hands-on heritage demos. Twenty thousand people came last year. It's free.
Why It Wins: Two full days means you pick your window — Saturday if you're feeling bold, Sunday if you want the safer weather bet. The Kids Zone alone could fill an hour. Food trucks handle lunch so you don't have to pack anything.

The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Keefer & Columbia Streets, Chinatown
⏰ When: Saturday July 25 & Sunday July 26, Noon–6 PM both days
👶 Ages: All ages. Stroller-friendly on the streets but it gets crowded after 1 PM.
🚽 Potty: Okay — port-a-potties on-site, plus Chinese Cultural Centre and nearby restaurants
💸 Cost: Free admission. Budget $15–25 for food truck lunch.
🅿️ Parking: Street parking is tight. Chinatown Plaza Parkade at 180 Keefer has a $14.50 event rate, or skip driving — take the Canada Line to Waterfront and transfer to the Expo Line one stop to Stadium–Chinatown. It's a short walk from there.
The Move: Go at noon when it opens. Crowds build after 2 PM. Sunday may be the smarter weather call this week.
Free street festivals with real programming for children are rare. This one's been running for 24 years and it shows. Your children get to see lion dances up close. That part alone is worth the trip.
🪶 Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play
The Gist: The 5th annual Chillin' in the Park takes over Dude Chilling Park in Mount Pleasant. Free live music from local bands, craft beer from Brassneck, Main Street Brewing, and Steamworks, plus food from Carp Sushi, AJ's Brooklyn Pizza, and Sula. Bring a blanket.
Why It Wins: It's free. It's walking distance from Main Street. The vibe is "neighbourhood block party with a better soundtrack." Children run around on the grass while you sit. That's it. That's the plan.
The Parent Specs:
⏰ When: Saturday July 25, 1–7 PM
👶 Ages: All ages. Pet-friendly too (on leash). Best for families with children who can free-range on grass for a while.
🚽 Potty: Unknown — park washrooms are hit-or-miss. Scout it when you arrive or make a brewery pit stop.
💸 Cost: Free admission. Beer and food on-site for purchase.
The Move: Walk from the Main Street / Broadway area. If you're driving, street parking on Brunswick or 8th is usually doable before 2 PM.
Sometimes the best weekend plan is "go sit in a park with music and pizza while the children chase each other." This is that.
🎪 Option 3: The Wildcard
The Gist: Drop-in art-making at the Gallery every Sunday. This week: collage inspired by the Emily Carr exhibition That Green Ideal and sound sculptures inspired by works from the permanent collection. No registration, no formal instruction — just show up and make stuff. At 2 PM there's a guided Family Tour of That Green Ideal for ages 5–12 (sign up same-day in The Making Place).
Why It Wins: Indoors. Drop-in. No registration. Art educators are there to help, but it isn't a formal class — so nobody cares if your child glues three things together and declares the masterpiece complete.

⏰ When: Sunday July 26, 11 AM–4 PM. Family Tour at 2 PM.
👶 Ages: All ages for The Making Place. Family Tour designed for 5–12. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible.
🚽 Potty: Gallery washrooms on-site.
💸 Cost: Included with Gallery admission. Children and youth 18 and under are free. Adults: $29 (BC residents) / $35 (general). The Gallery is cashless. No extra fee for The Making Place.
The Move: Arrive before 1:30 PM and sign up for the 2 PM Family Tour first. Then head to The Making Place while you wait.
Free drop-in art for children, a guided tour your five-year-old can actually enjoy, and you're covered if Saturday's showers spill into Sunday. Solid backup or solid plan — works either way.

The Vancity Children's Business Fair is this Saturday at Edith Cavell Elementary's gravel field, 11 AM–3 PM. Rain or shine. 29 children, 29 real businesses — I wrote about it Tuesday. This is your nudge. Come by, bring a few dollars, and say hi.

Also Worth Knowing
Friday evening. The dry one. UNA's free outdoor concert at Jim Taylor Park near Bean Around the World, 4:30–7:30 PM. Live music from Shane Floyd (folk/jazz) and Zelle Eliz (R&B), plus community booths. No registration. All ages. It's out at UBC so it's a bit of a trek, but if you want a Friday outing while the sun's cooperating, this is the move. Grab takeout and make it a picnic.
