Check your route before you leave and allow extra time if Davie is part of your morning. The first phase concentrates on Bute to Jervis, so that's where it'll bite first.

Free, indoors and no weekly commitment: StrongStart is one of those rare under-five programs that makes life easier instead of adding another recurring calendar alert.

Mount Pleasant's Elementary has a registration-only day this Friday, followed by regular drop-in mornings beginning next Wednesday. A parent or caregiver stays and joins in—so, no, it is not free childcare—but the activities and social time are handled for you. We will take the win.

The Move
New families should complete the online registration form before going, then bring original proof of the child's birthdate and proof of residence for verification. You do not need to print the application confirmation.

Regular sessions are drop-in and first come, first served. One adult may attend with up to three children. Returning to the same StrongStart centre? Your child does not need to be registered again.

Apparently fall registration season was not finished with us. It just needed a minute to lace up.

Registration for the first round of Vancouver Park Board fall skating lessons opens Thursday, September 17 at 7 p.m. There are classes for preschoolers, children, teens and adults—from "please help me stand up" beginners to backward-crossovers territory. Hillcrest is the obvious first search for Cambie families, with Kitsilano, Sunset and Kerrisdale as sensible backups.

The Move
Do the admin before registration night. Sign in to Vancouver Recreation, add your child as a family member, search "Skating," and save your preferred class—plus two backups—to your wish list. When 7 p.m. hits, go straight to the wish list and check out. This is not overplanning. This is simply understanding Vancouver rec registration.

One important trap: choose the correct level. The City does not transfer students after registration—they will be asked to withdraw if they are in the wrong one. Not sure? Visit a public skate before September 17 and ask for a free assessment. If your preferred class fills, join the waitlist.

And before you buy a helmet: the Park Board keeps a limited number of free hockey helmets at the rinks for registered lesson students, and Cyclone Taylor and Scoff's both take 15% off for them.

If September 21 is circled on your school calendar, VanDusen has a full-day outdoor option.

Its Pro-D camps for September through November are now posted, and the first one — Awesome Artists — is all about finding art in nature. Children explore colours, patterns, sculptures and creations around the Garden, then make a nature craft to bring home.

Register for September 21 now if that's your Pro-D day, or take one of the other fall dates — they're all posted and they all run 9 to 4.
Seven hours, entirely outdoors, and someone else supervising the glitter. Dress them for rain and let the Garden do the rest.

🔗 Register for the September 21 camp

Remember when cartoons were a once-a-week event and breakfast came in colours not found in nature? The Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party is bringing both back to the Park Theatre, which is to say: to Cambie Street.

The Move
Grab tickets in advance — and note that Park Theatre passes and Groupons do not work for this one, which is the kind of thing you find out at the door.

You can bring your own bowl and spoon, but the bowl must be non-breakable. Leave the ceramic one at home.

I've shared This World's Ours Centre before. This time there are two programs worth knowing about: Friday evening care, and a Monday-to-Friday after-school option.

It's an inclusive centre built for neurodiverse children and their families, on East 10th just off Main. All children are welcome in its programs.

Friday evenings, split into age groups, with games in the gym, arts and crafts, a snack, time in the sensory room and a movie.

Pick the theme your child will be happiest to see, then book it. Make dinner plans, see a friend, or sit somewhere quiet and enjoy nobody asking you for a snack.

Note the Slime Making date and make your own decision about whose floor that happens on.

🔗 Book Parents Night Out

Registration is open for the 2026/27 after-school program. Children get a snack, a social-emotional check-in, and time to relax with friends while playing games or making art.

The Move
If pickup from one of those four schools works for your family, register now. The full-time rate covers six Pro-D days, which is worth doing the math on before you book them one at a time.

The Roundhouse Halloween Spooktacular brings the ghosts, skeletons and spooky surprises indoors.

Children can dress up for the walkthrough, and each registered child gets a treat bag and a photo-booth print. October 31 is a long way off, but this one takes pre-registration and the time slots are the thing that runs out.

The Move
Book the slot now, not in October. Register online, call 604-713-1800 ext. 1, or register in person. Drop-ins are accepted if space allows — but on Halloween, "if space allows" is doing a lot of work.

If your child climbs the couch, the counters and possibly you, Richmond has a more appropriate outlet.

SkySteps Climbing is a new indoor climbing centre for children ages 4 and up. No climbing experience needed.

The Move
If your schedule has any wiggle room, go on a weekday and save $5 per climber.
An hour of vertical, indoors, weatherproof, and they sleep afterward.
