Hi friends!
Quick moment of gratitude: thank you to everyone who wrote back about the Spring Break Cheat Sheet. Your feedback genuinely helps me improve this thing and get to know what our community actually needs. If you haven't had a chance yet — I'd love to hear from you.
Hit reply. It doesn't have to be long. Even a "loved it" or "meh" helps more than you'd think.
This weekend is a choose-your-own-adventure situation. Something for every energy level, rain or shine.
The Weather: 🌥️ Grey and damp. Not a washout, but not exactly picnic weather either. Keep the boots near the door and lean indoor this weekend.
Saturday: 🐉 Aquarium Dragons / 🎬 $3.99 Karate Kid / ☕ Turkish Coffee + Kids Market
Sunday: 🎨 Art Making at the Gallery
Option 1: The Main Event
🐉 Vancouver Aquarium: "Dragons" Exhibit. Hit It Before Spring Break
The Gist: The Aquarium has just transformed into a lair of legends with their new "Dragons" temporary exhibit. You'll meet the real-life creatures that inspired dragon myths—think Gila monsters, Bearded Dragons, Green Tree Pythons, and Caimans. It's not just glass tanks, though; there are supersized dragon sculptures and tactile, fully-scaled replicas designed for kids to touch and explore.
Why it wins: "Limited time" with no end date announced means this could disappear quietly. But here's the real reason to go now: spring break hits mid-March and the Aquarium turns into a zoo (sorry). This weekend is your uncrowded window. Go while you can still see the exhibits instead of the back of someone's head.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Vancouver Aquarium, Stanley Park
⏰ When: This weekend. Check vanaqua.org/dragons for daily hours.
👶 Ages: All ages. Little ones love the sculptures. Older kids get into the live animal presentations.
🚽 Potty: Easy. Multiple washrooms throughout the Aquarium.
💸 Cost: Included with admission. Members: free. Non-members: ~$30+ adults, less for kids.
♿ Access: Stroller accessible. Transit or drive to Stanley Park.

Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play
The Gist: Cineplex's Saturday morning deal. This week it's Karate Kid: Legends for $3.99 per person at the theatre. The math: 2 adults + 2 older kids ≈ $16 total for a movie. That's less than one regular ticket.
Why it wins: Sixteen dollars for a family of four at the movies in 2026. No planning required — show up, sit down, done. It's indoors, it's cheap, and your kids are seated and quiet for two hours. If that's not winning, I don't know what is.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Multiple locations. Closest to the Corridor: Cineplex International Village (11:30 AM). Also: Park Royal (11:00 AM) and Metropolis (10:30 AM).
⏰ When: Saturday, March 7. Morning showtimes only (see above).
👶 Ages: Best for 5+. It's PG — kung fu action, nothing scary. Younger kids might squirm.
🚽 Potty: Easy. It's a movie theatre.
💸 Cost: $3.99/person at the theatre. Online: $4.99 (Scene+) or $5.49 (general) due to booking fees.
The Move: Buy at the theatre to get the $3.99 price and skip the online booking fee. International Village is a quick Canada Line ride from King Edward or Oakridge — skip the parking headache.

Option 3: The Wildcard
The Gist: Soumak Boutique, the women-owned Middle Eastern artisan shop inside Granville Island Kids Market, is hosting a pop-up café. Turkish and Syrian coffee brewed on hot sand, traditional treats, storytelling, and classic board games (chess, backgammon). Drop in anytime.
Why it wins: This is the holy grail setup: parents enjoy actual good coffee in a genuinely interesting cultural space while the kids entertain themselves. The Kids Market has the arcade, play areas, and toy shops — they won't even notice you're relaxing. It's a drop-in, no registration, no schedule to hit. You show up, you sip, the kids roam. Everyone's happy.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Kids Market, Granville Island (1496 Cartwright St — the yellow building)
⏰ When: Saturday, March 7. 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
👶 Ages: All ages for the Kids Market. The coffee, storytelling, and games are really a parent perk — kids can roam the Market.
🚽 Potty: Easy. Family washrooms with changing stations inside Kids Market.
💸 Cost: Free to enter the Market. Coffee and treats priced individually (expect ~$5-7 for coffee + Turkish delight).
🅿️ Parking: Granville Island parking can be a nightmare on Saturdays. Aim for before 11:30 AM or take the #50 bus / Aquabus.
The Move: Combine this with a lap around Granville Island. Hit the coffee pop-up, let the kids burn energy in the Market, grab food from the public market. You've got a full morning without a plan.

🌐 Also Worth Knowing: Sensory-Friendly Morning at Science World
The Gist: Science World is opening early (8 AM) specifically for families who need a calmer environment. They lower the volume, dim the lights, and limit capacity so it's not the usual mosh pit.
Why it wins: It is significantly cheaper than a regular ticket ($17 vs the usual ~$33). Plus, if your kid (or you) gets overwhelmed by the "Science World Roar," this is the only time it's actually peaceful. They even loan out noise-cancelling earmuffs and sensory toys at the front desk.
📍 Where: Science World (1455 Quebec St) — Link goes to Maps.
⏰ When: Saturday, March 7. 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM. (Operations return to "loud mode" at 11, but you can stay).
👶 Ages: All ages. (Designed for neurodiverse needs, but great for any toddler who hates loud noises).
🚽 Potty: Easy. Family washrooms and changing tables are available.
💸 Cost: $17 (Members free). Note: Caregivers for visitors with disabilities get in FREE (1:1 ratio). Get Tickets Here
The Move: Bring a piece of ID if you want to borrow the sensory kit (they hold it as collateral). And if your kid's tolerance is short, plan for 8–10 AM as your "best window" before it starts feeling busier.
One important gotcha: Community Access Passes aren't valid for this special event.
🎨 Bonus: Sunday at the Gallery — The Making Place
The Gist: Drop-in art activities at the Vancouver Art Gallery every Sunday. This week: collage inspired by the Emily Carr exhibit and ink paintings inspired by the Indigenous art collection. Plus a guided Family Tour at 2 PM.
Why it wins: Completely free for kids under 18 (always, at the Gallery). It's indoors, rain-proof, and genuinely creative — not just "sit and watch." No registration, no schedule pressure. Just show up between 11 and 4, make some art, and call it an outing.
📍 Where: Vancouver Art Gallery, Room 4East (4th floor) — 750 Hornby St
⏰ When: Sunday, March 8. 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Family Tour at 2:00 PM (sign up same-day in The Making Place).
👶 Ages: All ages for art activities. Family Tour designed for ages 5–12.
🚽 Potty: Easy. Accessible washrooms inside the Gallery.
💸 Cost: Free for kids under 18, Indigenous peoples, and Access Pass holders. Adults: $29 (BC residents) / $35 (general).

🍷 Grown-Up Corner: SIND Studio Porcelain Workshop
The Gist: A porcelain slip-casting workshop in Chinatown where you make your own cup and small plate from scratch. No experience needed. They guide you through the whole process and fire your finished pieces for you.
Why it wins: I personally know Dima and Nadya from SIND Studio. I know how original and unique their work is. The quality of their workshop is high and the skills that you gain are invaluable. This isn't a paint-a-mug situation — it's real porcelain work, and you walk away with something beautiful and handmade. Tag-team with your partner, call in the grandparents, and give yourself a morning.
⏰ When: Saturday, March 7. 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
💸 Cost: $50 per person.
📩 Booking: Limited spots. Email [email protected] to reserve.
