Hi friends!
Today is officially the last day of winter. Tomorrow at exactly 7:45:59 am, spring arrives. That exact second.
No, I am not suddenly a massive astronomy nerd. I have Iranian roots, and tomorrow is Nowruz, Iranian New Year. It's calculated down to the exact second the sun crosses the equator, ushering in a season of renewal, balance, and convincing yourself that 11°C is warm enough for sandals.
Happy Nowruz to everyone celebrating. And happy first weekend of Spring Break to everyone who just needs a plan.
The Weather: ☁️ Friday's mild (12°C) with possible showers. Saturday's looking dry (7°C). Sunday's a coin-flip. Keep the rain layer in the car either way.
Friday: 📖 Wild Things at Carousel Theatre
Saturday: ⚔️ Lightsaber shows at Kids Market + 🍿 SpongeBob at Cineplex
Sunday: 🏘️ Burnaby Village Museum
Option 1: The Main Event
The Gist: Free Star Wars-style lightsaber battles are happening at Kids Market this Saturday, complete with Jedi photo ops afterward. One day only. If your kid is even slightly into Star Wars, this is a no-brainer.
Why it wins: High-tier novelty for zero dollars. Kids Market is indoors, so the weather is irrelevant. Two showtimes (12 PM and 1:30 PM) give you flexibility. And the rest of the market is right there: arcade, play area, toy shops, bumper cars. One trip, full morning.
What's actually there (Spring Break week at Kids Market):
⚔️ Lightsaber shows + Jedi photos
🌱 Pot-a-plant (free, while supplies last)
☕ Turkish/Syrian coffee on hot sand
🕹️ Arcade, bumper cars, 4-level play area (paid)
🧸 25+ toy and kids' shops
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Kids Market, Granville Island (1496 Cartwright St)
⏰ When: Saturday, March 21. Shows at 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM
👶 Ages: All ages. Stroller-friendly inside the market.
🚽 Potty: Easy. Indoor venue, accessible washrooms.
💸 Cost: Free (shows and Jedi photos). Shops, arcade, and play area cost extra, obviously. Budget $10-20 for the inevitable "can I get something?" moment.
The Move: Aim for the 12:00 PM show so you can actually find stroller parking and escape Granville Island before the afternoon traffic chaos sets in.

Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play
🍿 SpongeBob at Cineplex Family Favourites
The Gist: Cineplex is screening The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants this Saturday as part of their weekly Family Favourites program. $3.99 a ticket. 11:30 AM. Done.
Why It Wins: It requires zero planning, zero packing, and zero energy. You show up, you sit down, someone else entertains your children for 90 minutes. The closest participating theatre to the Corridor is International Village (free parking while you watch).
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Cineplex Odeon International Village (88 W Pender St)
⏰ When: Saturday, March 21, 11:30 AM
👶 Ages: All ages. SpongeBob skews 4-10 but honestly, everyone knows SpongeBob.
🚽 Potty: Easy. It's a movie theatre.
💸 Cost: $3.99/ticket at the box office. Online is $4.99-$5.49 with booking fees. Family of four: under $20 at the door.

Option 3: The Wildcard
The Gist: A free spring-break outing with built-in wandering, heritage-site novelty, and enough room for mixed ages to not be on top of each other.
Why It Wins: It's free. Actually, fully free (carousel is $2.71/ride, but that's it). The site is big enough that mixed ages can spread out instead of being stacked on top of each other in one room. There's enough built-in variety that you don't need to plan anything. Just show up, grab the scavenger hunt sheet at the gate, and wander. It's the kind of outing that feels like a real day out without the $80 family admission price.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Burnaby Village Museum (6501 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby)
⏰ When: Daily through March 27. Open 11 AM - 4:30 PM, last entry at 4 PM.
👶 Ages: All ages. Stroller-friendly on the main paths. Older kids will get more out of the hands-on activities.
🚽 Potty: Easy. Public washrooms on site.
💸 Cost: Free admission. Carousel rides $2.71 each (or 13 rides for $32.50). Bring cash or card for the carousel and Mai's Cafe on site.
The Move: Check which special activities are running the day you go. The best combo days are Wednesdays and Fridays (archaeology pop-up + either storytime or mahjong). Thursdays have heritage games on the Elworth lawn, which is great for the 4-8 crowd. Saturday has the steam demo if your kid is into how things work.

📖Bonus: The Granville Island Double Header
The Gist: Maurice Sendak's classic monster-filled bedtime story comes to life on stage at Performance Works on Granville Island. This is its final closing weekend. Ages 3-7. 65 minutes.
Why It Wins: It's interactive, so the wiggly ones are supposed to move around. It's indoors, so weather is a non-issue. Multiple showtimes across the weekend give you options. And if you're already heading to Granville Island for the lightsaber shows on Saturday, this is a ready-made double header: catch the 10 AM or 12:30 PM Wild Things show, then walk two minutes to Kids Market for the noon lightsaber show.
The Parent Specs:
📍 Where: Carousel Theatre, Granville Island (1411 Cartwright St)
⏰ When: Friday 3 PM & 5:30 PM | Saturday 10 AM & 12:30 PM | Sunday 1:30 PM
👶 Ages: 3-7
🚽 Potty: Easy. Indoor theatre, washrooms in the lobby.
💸 Cost: ~$19/kid, ~$30/adult (includes fees). Tickets here.
The Move: The Saturday 10 AM show is your best play. You're done by 11:15, which puts you at Kids Market right on time for the noon lightsaber show. Two Granville Island wins, one trip.

🐘 Also Worth Knowing: Elephant & Piggie Party at South Hill Library
Free drop-in party at VPL's South Hill Branch this Saturday (March 21), 2-3 PM. Crafts and games based on the Mo Willems books your kid has made you read eleven thousand times.
It's geared toward school-age kids, it's free, and no registration needed. If you're looking for a low-key hour that gets you out of the house without packing snacks or finding parking, this is it.
