But first — this weekend. Fall is officially kicking off in the neighbourhood, and it's a good one.

🎬 Cambie Village Fall Kickoff

Free School of Rock screening at The Park Theatre in the morning. Jack Black, big screen, no charge. Then a short walk to the W. 18th Plaza for face painting, balloon twisting, colouring, and live performances by School of Rock Vancouver kids. Every child gets a free activity booklet. The whole day is complimentary, courtesy of Cambie Village businesses.

Why It Wins: Completely free. Movie, activities, booklet — all courtesy of Cambie Village businesses. Two events in one outing, zero driving between them. The Park Theatre is a real historic cinema, not a gym with a projector. And School of Rock holds up. The parents will enjoy this one too.

The Move: RSVP your movie tickets at theparktheatre.ca — limit 4 per transaction. If you RSVP and don't scan in by 9:30 AM, your seat may not be held. After the movie, grab a coffee on Cambie and a short walk to the plaza.

🎨 The Making Place — Design Vancouver Festival Edition

Drop-in art making at the Vancouver Art Gallery. This Sunday is a special Design Vancouver Festival edition — kids build Binning-inspired mobiles and Vasarely-inspired circle collages. Art educators help. No formal instruction. Show up, make something, take it home. There's also a guided Family Tour at 2 PM for ages 5–12.

Why It Wins: Drop-in. No registration, no time commitment — arrive whenever between 11 and 4. Kids 18 and under are free, always. They leave with something they made, which buys you approximately 20 minutes of "look what I did" at home. Indoors, so it works rain or shine.

Why It Matters: Art activities included with Gallery admission, led by real educators with real materials. The Design Festival angle makes it feel like an event.

🌾 London Farm Country Fest

Harvest afternoon at a historic 1890s farmhouse in Steveston. Sack races. Scavenger hunts. A honey bee talk. Guess-the-pumpkin-weight. Arts and crafts. A bake sale and farm fruit stand. Old-school, charming, and the kind of afternoon that makes kids think you're a genius for finding it.

Why It Wins: Free. All ages. A heritage farm with chickens, heritage gardens, and vintage equipment — not a parking lot with hay bales. The bee talk at 1:30 and 2:30 is legitimately interesting for kids and parents. And the bake sale plus farm fruit stand means you're coming home with baking and seasonal produce.

The Move: Pair it with Steveston Village afterward — a short drive. Fish and chips at Pajo's, boardwalk along the water. Double-header Saturday sorted.

🎃 Heads Up: Pumpkin Patch Season Starts This Weekend

Thirteen farms around Vancouver will sell you a pumpkin this October. On Instagram they are identical. None of them lead with what the day costs, how long the drive really is, or whether there is a toilet that flushes.

So we checked all thirteen, priced a family of four at every one, and found the free harvest morning that happens 15 minutes from King Edward Station.
