Stanley Park is getting an after-dark outing that does not require anyone to pretend a regular walk is an exciting family plan.

Astra Lumina makes its Canadian debut October 22 at the Stanley Park train site. It is a self-guided outdoor walk through nine zones filled with large light installations, projections, sound and a story about stars visiting Earth. The whole experience takes about 45 to 60 minutes and is open to all ages.

Why It Matters
Come late October it's dark by dinner, and this is an after-dark plan that isn't a screen and isn't a drive out to Richmond. It's also one of the rare October outings that works for a three-year-old and a twelve-year-old on the same night, and the three-year-old doesn't cost anything. ✨

Weekend child care for ages 5 to 12 is a rare find, especially when your workweek does not stop on Friday. Champlain Heights Community Centre is now offering licensed care on Saturdays and Sundays. CBC reports that it is Vancouver's first licensed weekend child-care program for school-aged children.

The Move
Check the weekend dates you actually need, then confirm availability and ask what the quoted $65 daily fee covers before booking. For this Saturday, the four-day rule means booking today. Then ask the front desk about the fee reduction refund, because it will not come off on its own.

Britannia Pool shut down Friday night after sections of tile came loose from the pool basin, which Britannia called an "unexpected failure." Crews have drained it, repaired the tiles, and are now refilling and reheating it to meet Vancouver Coastal Health water standards, so reopening this week is the hope rather than the promise. As of this writing, Britannia's own page still says closed.

This is East Van, so it only matters if your family swims there: lessons, lane swim, or a club. The one for the calendar is the long maintenance closure, pushed from November so swim clubs could finish their season. It is now slated for mid-January 2027, still subject to approvals.

The move: If you have a lesson booked this week, check Britannia's page the morning of before you drive over. For a swim closer to home, Hillcrest is open 6 AM to 9 PM daily, and drop-in is $7.93 for an adult, $3.97 for a child 5 to 12, preschoolers free, before tax. The outdoor pool there closed for the season on September 7, so plan on indoors.

The bit that actually changes your afternoon: Triple O's inside is closed for renovations from September 9 to the end of October. The Snack Lab is still open, and so is the lunchroom if you bring your own.

The front of the building is also under construction, reportedly until about September 22, with signs pointing visitors to another way in. Science World stays open the whole time, normal hours, 10 AM to 5 PM. Treat the end date as approximate and assume you will be hunting for the temporary door on arrival.

The move: Pack food, arrive at 10 AM when the doors open, and give yourself five extra minutes out front to find the way in with a stroller. Admission is $37.50 for an adult and $25.50 for children 3 to 12, free for 2 and under.

Plan your visit

YVR is running a full-scale emergency drill today, 8 AM to 3 PM: more than 400 people from 25 agencies, activity on the airfield and inside the terminal, and volunteers playing injured passengers. Everyone taking part is in a marked vest, there is signage throughout, and flights are running normally.

The move: Give children a quick heads-up before you arrive so the scene does not catch them off guard. If you see activity marked with exercise signs and identifying vests, you will know what is happening. For anything that is not clearly identified as part of the exercise, follow airport staff directions as usual.

YVR's notice

ICBC is swapping out all 140 intersection safety cameras in the province, in phases, between now and spring 2027. Before anyone panics about a ticket blitz: the province's own release says the new ones have higher resolution and "similar enforcement and data capabilities" as the old ones.

About 90 of the 140 sites will need minor road or sidewalk work of roughly two weeks each, though the province hasn't said which ones or when. The cameras closest to home: Cambie at 41st, Oak at 33rd, 41st, 49th, 57th and 70th, Granville at 16th, King Edward, 41st and 49th, and Main at 49th.

The move: Nothing to do today. The old cameras keep running while the new ones go in.

Here is a low-key outing for the babies and toddlers who would rather squish, touch and explore than sit through a formal activity. Lumino Craft's Animals & Their Habitats sessions pair sensory play with hands-on crafts, while giving little ones and their grown-ups time to connect.

The Move
As of Monday night, this Thursday's sessions were already waitlist-only, so book next Thursday, the 24th, through the website or by DM. Space is limited, and toddler plans are already unpredictable enough.

Why It Matters
It's indoors, it's exactly an hour, and the mess is in someone else's room. If you're on leave and the days have started running together, this is a Thursday morning with a start time, an end time, and other adults in it. 🐘

Play and Learn

Families and caregivers with children ages 0–5 can choose from indoor and outdoor play, sensory activities, imaginative play and Circle Time. Parents and caregivers can also get in-house support and connections to community resources.

Both afternoon sessions are slower paced, which may suit a child who does better with a quieter play session.

Papa's Playgroup

Dads with children up to age 8 get a relaxed place to play, talk and connect. Registration is recommended for this one, not required.

Toy Lending Library

The Toy Lending Library is online, with a collection of safe, enjoyable toys for young children. It is worth a look before another toy quietly applies for permanent residency in your living room.

Kitchen scraps can do more than haunt the back of the fridge. Riley Park Learning Garden is running a free, one-hour workshop this Saturday on how to compost. The worms do most of the heavy lifting; you just need to learn the system.

The Move
Register before you go. It's free and takes a minute. Bring a tote for the bin, because a box of worms is not a thing you want riding loose in the stroller basket.

The Deep Ecology Forest Walk is exactly what it sounds like: you walk the second-growth forest at UBC Farm for two hours while someone who studies trees tells you what you are actually looking at. It is led by Ryan Regier, UBC's Collections Services Librarian, who has been running forest walks around Vancouver for six years. Two hundred years ago this was ancient forest, stewarded by local Indigenous peoples, and the walk is about what is left of it.

One thing the listing doesn't say: whether children are welcome. UBC calls these Community Workshops and says they're open to everyone, but there's no child ticket, no stated age, and nothing about terrain or strollers. A two-hour walk that is mostly listening is a call you make for your own crew.

The Move
Book it now rather than the week of. If you are hoping to bring a child along, email UBC Farm and ask before you pay, because the listing will not answer it for you. And if you are making the drive anyway, go early: the UBC Farm Saturday market runs 10 AM to 2 PM in the same spot, so you can do the market first and walk straight into the 2 PM start.

Why It Matters
Two hours outdoors where someone else does the explaining and you come home able to name six trees. Bring the one who asks what every tree is called, or go without them. Some Saturdays, that is the entire appeal. 🌲
