Hi friends!

It’s the final sprint before Christmas. We are embracing the "cozy dark" energy (mostly because we have no choice).

The Weather: 🌧️ / ☔ High chance of rain all weekend. Dress for puddles or stay under cover.

The TL;DR:

  • Saturday: Kerrisdale Carriage Rides

  • Sunday: Winter Solstice Lantern Festival (Granville Island)

Option 1: The Main Event

The Gist: Embrace the darkest and shortest day of the year and have some fun. The event is a slightly chaotic, very magical procession of handmade lanterns, drummers, and fire performers.

Why it wins: It burns off energy before bedtime and feels like a "core memory" moment before the Christmas chaos truly hits.

📍 Where: Granville Island (Processions meet at Triangle Square & Water Park)

When: Sunday, Dec 21 | Starts @ 6:00 pm

👶 Ages: All ages (visual sensory haven but loud drums)

🚽 Potty: Easy. Community Centre + Market

💸 Cost: Free.

💡 Tip: Do not drive onto the Island after 5 pm. Park on 2nd or 3rd Ave and walk down, or you will get stuck in traffic.

Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play

The Gist: Free horse and carriage rides through Kerrisdale Village with a brass band playing in the background. Classic, old-school Christmas vibes. Basically, a Hallmark movie set, but with better coffee nearby.

Why it wins: It is low commitment. It’s the kind of wholesome outing grandparents will talk about for the next 14 months, and you can be done in 45 minutes flat.

📍 Where: Kerrisdale Village (Usually starts near 41st & Yew)

When: Saturday, Dec 20 | 11 AM – 4 PM

🚽 Potty: Tricky. You’re relying on coffee shop goodwill.

💸 Cost: Free.

💡 Tip: Go before noon. The line gets thick after lunch.

(The "Smart Parent" alternative)

The Gist: The "Cool Mom" of holiday markets. It’s less crowded than the downtown one, and entry is $0.

Why it wins: The SeaBus ride is an activity all by itself. You get market energy, skating, Santa wandering around, and snacks… without paying an admission fee just for the privilege of buying a $16 pretzel.

📍 Where: The Shipyards (just off the Seabus)

When: Daily until Dec 24 (11 AM – 9 PM)

🚽 Potty: Easy. Public washrooms in the Pipe Shop/Shipyards.

💸 Cost: Free entry.

💡 Tip: The Pipe Shop and some market areas are covered, but dress for the elements (it is the waterfront, after all).

The "It's Pouring" Backup Plan

The Gist: A 30-minute wander through a hotel lobby full of wildly decorated gingerbread houses. Indoors, stroller-friendly, free, and smells like Christmas.

📍 Where: Hyatt Regency (655 Burrard St)

💸 Cost: Free (Donations to Make-A-Wish encouraged).

🚽 Potty: Easy – hotel lobby washrooms

💡 Tip: This is your “we can’t do a whole evening, but we need to get out of the house” play. SkyTrain in, lobby lap, one treat, home.

📊 The Weekend Roll Call

I want to make sure I’m finding events you actually want to go to. A quick vote tells me exactly what you are looking for (so I can find more of it).

Got one friend who’d love this?

Forward this to them and save them an hour of doom-scrolling “what should we do this weekend?”

We’ve got this!
