Hi friends!

Vancouver is doing that rare January thing where it pretends it’s spring. We’re taking the win.

The Weather: ☀️ Bright and dry all weekend (Fri Jan 16–Sun Jan 18). Cold mornings, sunny afternoons. The move: layers + sunglasses (yes, in January) + get outside before the 3 PM “why is it already dark?” crash.

Hot Chocolate Festival Starts This Weekend.

The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival kicks off Saturday and runs until Valentine’s Day. If you’ve never done it: local cafés and bakeries create absolutely unhinged hot chocolates + paired treats. It’s part dessert, part sport.

There’s no “festival ground.” It’s self-guided. Which is fun… until you’re standing on a sidewalk with a hangry toddler and 12 browser tabs.

So I made a Cambie Corridor Hot Chocolate Festival cheat sheet:

  • Mount Pleasant “Hub” route (walkable cluster)

  • Cambie “Central Spot” route (easy Canada Line vibes)

  • Scenic Route (Fairview + Granville Island energy)

Final pro tip: check hours before you go. A lot of coffee shops close earlier than the dessert spots — so it’s usually best to hit the cafés first and save the “treat lounge” energy for later.

Option 1: The Main Event

🌐 Sensory-Friendly Morning at Science World

The Gist: Science World is opening early (8 AM) specifically for families who need a calmer environment. They lower the volume, dim the lights, and limit capacity so it’s not the usual mosh pit.

Why it wins: It is significantly cheaper than a regular ticket ($17 vs the usual ~$33). Plus, if your kid (or you) gets overwhelmed by the "Science World Roar," this is the only time it’s actually peaceful. They even loan out noise-cancelling earmuffs and sensory toys at the front desk.

  • 📍 Where: Science World (1455 Quebec St)Link goes to Maps.

  • When: Saturday, Jan 17. 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM. (Operations return to "loud mode" at 11, but you can stay).

  • 👶 Ages: All ages. (Designed for neurodiverse needs, but great for any toddler who hates loud noises).

  • 🚽 Potty: Easy. Family washrooms and changing tables are available.

  • 💸 Cost: $17 (Members free). Note: Caregivers for visitors with disabilities get in FREE (1:1 ratio). Get Tickets Here

The Move: Bring a piece of ID if you want to borrow the sensory kit (they hold it as collateral). And if your kid’s tolerance is short, plan for 8–10 AM as your “best window” before it starts feeling busier.

One important gotcha: Community Access Passes aren’t valid for this special event.

Option 2: The "Low Drag" Play

🍿 Cineplex Family Favourites — Madagascar (20th Anniversary)

The Gist: Cineplex's $3.99 Saturday movie program is back, and it kicks off with Madagascar. Yes, the "I like to move it move it" one. Yes, it's 20 years old now. Yes, you are also 20 years older. So be careful when you “move it”.

Why it wins: It is cheaper than a latte. It is indoors. But mostly: You get to sit in a dark, comfortable chair for 90 minutes while your children are entertained by a zebra.

The Parent Specs:

  • 📍 Where: The Closest participating theatres are Park Royal or Metrotown. Note: Marine Gateway is NOT showing this one.

  • When: Saturday, Jan 17, (showtimes vary by theatre).

  • 👶 Ages: All ages. (It’s Madagascar. If they talk, no one cares).

  • 💸 Cost: If you buy online: $3.99 (CineClub, fee waived) / $4.99 (Scene+ incl. fee) / $5.49 (others incl. fee) + tax. Get Tickets Here

The Move: Films and participating locations can vary — confirm your theatre before you promise the kids Madagascar.

Option 3: The Wildcard

🍕Kids’ Pizza Making at Rocky Mountain Flatbread

The Gist: Kids roll out their own dough, pile on toppings, and eat their creation. You sit there and drink wine while someone else supervises the flour situation. Sunday evenings on Main St.

Why it wins: It outsources the mess. Dinner is handled. Entertainment is handled. That's a triple win.

  • 📍 Where: Rocky Mountain Flatbread, 4186 Main Street

  • When: Sundays — drop in 4:30–6:45 PM(it runs as part of dinner service)

  • 👶 Ages: Best for kids who can follow a couple of steps and wait their turn (they market it as a kids’ activity)

  • 🚽 Potty: Easy (restaurant)

  • 💸 Cost: Not free — kids choose a Mozza pizza or a kids’ three-course option; adults order from the regular menu

  • 🧾 Booking note: Up to 4 kids per reservation; walk-ins welcome, but it’s popular

The Move: Reserve a table, then tell your server the kids want to make pizza. They’ll take them from the table when it’s their turn.

Got a friend who loves hot chocolate?

Forward this to them and save them an hour of doom-scrolling “what should we do this weekend?”

We’ve got this!
